Crowdsourcing is a powerful tool to solve complex problems, and Gina Trapani's open source ThinkTank is potentially a great tool to do just that.

Gina Trapani's open source ThinkTank server software is an application that uses crowdsourcing to get answers to what ails America and then some.

There's a lot of noise emanating from social networks, but there's also some valuable information there too.

To separate the wheat from the chaff, Trapani created ThinkTank. ThinkTank is an open source server application that pulls in responses to questions posed to Twitter and allows the user to categorize, source and collate them.

In February the White House said they would be using ThinkTank to try and solve some of America's biggest problems. The first project the White House will use ThinkTank for is its "Grand Challenges of the 21st Century."

Computer World's Mitch Wagner interviewed Trapani and wrote, "In the Grand Challenge, the President is looking to identify big scientific and technological achievements the U.S. should prioritize. These are Moon-landing-sized goals. Potential achievements: Early detection of diseases from saliva samples, solar cells as cheap as paint, educational software as compelling as games, even teleporting matter."

Trapani said, "Really big insane cool scientific achievements."
