Willow Garage wants an open source robot operating system so they can make more robots.

Willow Garage is giving away 10 robots to 10 teams of robot developers to see what they can do.

“The ten research groups who receive the PR2 will help build a growing library of programs which any developer can use in their own efforts to build better robots,” reports Singularity Hub's Aaron Saenz.

Giving a research team a cool robot with two working arms and lasers will free the developers to focus on writing code. The end result, if Willow Garage repeats this process, is the creation of an advanced open source robot operating system and robots.
