ARM and IBM have taken the wraps off the ARM mbed IoT Starter Kit-Ethernet Edition, a new tool designed to help developers quickly get started building devices and software for the Internet of Things. The starter kit includes a Freescale FRDM-K64F development board that uses an ARM processor and ARM's mbed IoT operating system and connects to IBM's BlueMix cloud computing services. The kit also includes 1MB of flash storage, a speaker, a temperature sensor, an accelerometer and a joystick.

"Smart cities, businesses and homes capable of sharing rich information about their surroundings will be critical in unlocking the potential of IoT," said Krisztian Flautner, general manager of ARM's IoT business. Flautner added that the starter kit "will accelerate the availability of connected devices by making product and service prototyping faster and easier."

ARM gave away early versions of the starter kits this week at the Embedded World 2015 conference in Germany.
